Study: Trained interpreters improve communication between patients and providers

March 3, 2010

A study from Mathematica Policy Research, a non-partisan survey team, has found that trained interpreters help improve patient satisfaction during visits to the emergency room, HealthLeadersMedia reports. Additionally, care providers were more satisfied with the communication when a trained interpreter was present.

Participants in the study were divided into two groups. One group's participants received the more common methods of interpretation during treatment, using a telephone interpreter service and bilingual staff members to interpret. Members of the other group were able to use a personal interpreter present during the exchange of information between them and their care providers. 96% of patients in the latter group reported being very satisfied with their care, compared with 23% of patients from the former group.
